State of Health in the EU 2019: the European Commission published the reports that depict the profile of health systems in 30 countries

Country Health Profiles are being issued with the Companion Report that shows some of the biggest trends in the transformation of the healthcare systems and draws key conclusions from the Profiles

The European Commission supports the EU countries in their evidence based policy making through its cycle of knowledge on health “The state of health in the EU”, a two-year initiative that provides policy makers, interest groups, and health practitioners with factual, comparative data and insights into health and health systems in EU countries.

The cycle is undertaken by the European Commission in cooperation with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, consisting in four main stages:

  • The joint OECD-Commission report Health at a Glance: Europe kicks off each State of Health in the EU cycle with a horizontal, cross-country assessment of national health systems' performance in the EU.
  • Individual Country Health Profiles, provide an in-depth analysis of health systems, looking at the health of the population and important risk factors, as well as the effectiveness, accessibility and resilience of health systems in each EU Member State. They clearly reflect shared objectives across the Member States, and reveal potential areas where the Commission can encourage mutual learning and exchange of good practices.
  • A Companion Report, published alongside the Country Health Profiles, showcases some of the biggest trends in the transformation of our health systems.
  • At the close of the two-year cycle, health authorities in EU countries can request voluntary exchanges with the experts behind the State of Health in the EU, to discuss findings and potential policy responses.

Last 28th November the European Commission published the reports that depict the profile of health systems in 30 countries. Country Health Profiles are being issued with the Companion Report that draws key conclusions from the Profiles and shows some of the biggest trends in the transformation of the healthcare systems on:

  • Vaccine hesitancy
  • The digital transformation of health promotion and disease prevention
  • Gaps in health care accessibility
  • Skill mix innovations among the health workforce
  • The product life cycle of medicines
