The International Neurovascular Training Course on Sickle Cell Disease has been held last March!

52 participants had the opportunity to learn about the state-of-the-art of Transcranial Doppler sonography.

The International Neurovascular Training Course on Sickle Cell Disease" organized by the Azienda Ospedale-Università di Padova in collaboration with ERN-EuroBloodNet, the Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (AIEOP) and the European Society of Neurosonology and cerebral hemodynamics, was held in Padova on March 30-31st 2023.

The scientific directors of the course, Prof. Claudio Baracchini MD, PhD, FESO and Prof. Raffaella Colombatti (ERN-EuroBloodNet expert from AO Padua) designed an educational plan that to feature the state-of-the-art of Transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD): the gold standard to assess blood flow velocities in the vessels of the Circle of Willis in Sickle Cell Disease patients and predict the risk of stroke.

The in-person event, addressed to medical doctors specialized in paediatrics, neurology, haematology, neuroradiology residents and fellows in all related fields, consisted of state-of-the-art presentations, intensive transcranial ultrasound workshops, and clinical case-based discussions.

52 attendees from 8 EU countries + UK and also some from the USA, Martinica, Arab Emirates and Lebanon gathered in the Orto Botanico for lectures and hand-on-sessions with an international faculty from Italy, France, UK, Germany and Croatia.

Three young physicians won the scholarships to present their clinical cases at the course. It was a great opportunity to share multidisciplinary experiences on cerebrovascular complications in sickle cell disease and an opportunity to enhance collaboration in this challenging field.

A time slot entitled "ERN-EuroBloodNet Clinical case discussions" has been chaired by the ERN-EuroBloodNet experts Holger Cario (Ulm University Medical Center (UUMC)) and Maddalena Casale (AOU - University Luigi Vanvitelli).
